EPS is a good choice for insulating buildings: it conserves our resources and at the same time provides a pleasant indoor climate. But how environmentally friendy expanded polystyrene really is can only be seen by taking a look at all the life phases of the insulation material, from its production and use to its recycling. An ecological view with useful facts about the environmental impact of EPS during its entire life cycle is provided by this new informative brochure of our "in brief" series.
The environmental impact of EPS is highest during its production and installation compared to the other life cycle phases. However, the impact is minimised in these phases as well through the economical use of resources and short transportation routes. In the years that follow, there is little to no impact on the environment, on the contrary: during its use, EPS insulation saves a lot of energy and thus sustainably reduces CO2 emissions – an important step to achieve climate goals. Thus, the insulation pays off both energetically and ecologically after only a few years. And even after its use, the environmental impact is extremely low compared to other insulation materials. According to a study by ifeu institute and natureplus, in which existing and future recycling options were ecologically evaluated, EPS is a sustainable, ecological and thus the best alternative.
